‘An Afternoon with Allen Eskens’

June 8, 2023, 1 PM at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church

Allen Eskens is a Minnesota bestselling and award-winning author of mystery, thriller, and suspense novels. His works include The Life We Bury, The Guise of Another, The Heavens May Fall, The Deep Dark Descending, The Shadows We Hide, Nothing More Dangerous, The Stolen Hours, and Forsaken Country. His newest book Saving Emma is available for preorder with a release date of September 19, 2023.  All his books are character arcs that revolve around a small community rather than a series. He recently retired from 25 years of experience as a criminal attorney.

You won't want to miss this presentation on June 8th at 1:00 PM at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 220 3rd Street South, Hackensack, Minnesota 56452. A book signing and sale will follow Allen's presentation along with refreshments. Reservations are required.

What started this handcrafted jewelry making process 11 years ago came about after buying a pair of blue sea glass earrings in Puerto Rico.  "Silver tray" and "Icelandic" fish leather earrings round out my earring collection.

Bear Paw Paperworks started as a business about 50 years ago.  Linda and I have been creating and doing art shows since then. Northern Minnesota has been, and continues to be, an inspiration for our body of work. Using wool, fiber, handmade paper, sticks, stones, metal, sea glass & beads, the dyed, needle-felted wool is layered into nature inspired 2D textured art wall hangings.

The Wonder of it all

Mark Swenson, an accomplished Northern Minnesota artist, believes it is important for a wildlife artist to live in close proximity to his subject matter. Mark's paintings and woodworking reflect his profound connection and appreciation of nature and wildlife.

Mark studied commercial and fine art at Bemidji State University. He won the Minnesota Lake Trout Stamp in 1994. His lifelong passion for the outdoors and incredible eye for detail enables him to uniquely capture his subject matter, a mood or an experience on canvas. 

Mark's paintings and woodwork hang in private collections across the country.

"I've been influenced by the Impressionists and their use of brush stroke to create warmth and movement. I like C.M. Russell for his rawness and colors of his landscapes, as well as Robert Bateman for the way he presents the whole picture of a bird or mammal in its natural habitat." 

"It enables me to see and experience the subtle nuances of nature. Watching a storm move across a lake can be a real stimulus. I particularly enjoy hunting for waterfowl, upland birds and fishing the north shore of Lake Superior."

In her childhood, Becky Steinhoff used to go to garage sales and buy old jewelry, take it apart, and redo it. Even though she still repurposes old pieces, her main focus now is working with semiprecious gemstones and creating nature-inspired pieces. Because she uses dragonflies and other creatures of nature as focal points, her company is called Mystical Deva. The word deva means spirit of nature. As a child, she believed dragonflies were created when fairies and dragons merged, hence their "mystical" nature.

Jerry Raedeke comes to Northwoods Art & Book Festival with a distinguished past. The renowned wildlife and landscape artists paintings have been shown at major wildlife exhibitions in the nation and have received many prestigious awards. Ducks Unlimited Artist of the Year in 6 states including Minnesota. Wildlife mugs with a Raedeke design appeared regularly on television’s, “Northern Exposure”,  and in several movies. Anheuser-Busch commissioned  Raedeke to paint the World-Famous Budweiser Clydesdales in a wildlife setting. He has been in documentaries on public television... Jerry’s list of accomplishments is long and honorable.

Raedeke’s love of the outdoors has also drawn him to conservation. Over his career, he has donated roughly 85,000 prints and over 150 original paintings, with proceeds going towards conservation efforts. He has raised over $5 million for Ducks Unlimited, which is just one of the organizations he works with.

About Josephine Cora

I am a contemporary wood-burning and watercolor artist living in Owatonna, Minnesota with my husband and two children. My studio is based in our home, and I create during naptime and in the evenings. I am passionate about landscapes and nature in general. It brings me so much joy when I can create something that has a personal connection to others. In my paintings, I aim to capture and appreciate the world around us to remind the viewer to live for these moments of peace and gratitude.

The Artwork

I fell in love with the texture and visual interest wood grain creates when it is combined with wood burning and watercolor. Each wood panel is selected with the inspiration image in mind so darker grain and knots can flow into the painting intentionally and amplify the beauty found in the landscape. I use a variety of wood burning techniques and tools to bring out the dimensions of the space while adding layers of watercolor and gouache to bring the elements to life. Each painting is sealed with a clear varnish to preserve the pigments of the paint and the depth of the wood-burning. The balance these mediums bring to the landscape is cohesive and brings a sense of peace and gratitude when viewing. My artwork can be found online or in-person at art shows across the state of Minnesota.
